Dull & Rusty Sword

by Pamela Verrett

The Word: Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)

The Story: Each month, we (the entire church body) begin the month by practicing a spiritual discipline. Spiritual disciplines give us the opportunity to give up something physical to gain something spiritual. In July, we practiced the discipline of fasting, and we abstained from entertainment each day after 3pm. I must admit, I was pretty excited about beginning a new discipline. I was eager to see what would come from this time dedicated to God, and find out what God had planned for me in this season of life.

As I fasted and prayed, I was determined to trust God at this word. When I recognized I was facing a temptation, I wrote that temptation on an index card and on the back of the card I wrote a verse to address that temptation. With my temptations before me, God began to show me areas of my life that required a change.

The Reflection:
It’s amazing how quickly God reveals our heart. I do not always like what He shows me, and sometimes I’m so wrapped up in going through the motions that I fail to seek direction from the Bible.

The Application:
In one of Pastor Conway's messages, Your Invisible Armor, he reminded us of six tools we should use to stand firm to defeat the enemy (Ephesians 6:14-17). My "sword of the Spirit" is not as sharp as it needs to be. This week, ask yourself, which of the six tools you need to sharpen to stand firm on God’s word and instructions?

The Prayer: God, empower us to act according to Your instructions. Help us to hide Your word in our hearts that we may walk boldly through each seasons of life. Amen.
